Living in a cave above ground…

This man is the principal of a school in Port-a-Piment, Haiti. His office seemed like a cave of knowledge.

Men like this are valuable assets in a town. They are usually well connected and “in the know” – people tell him things.

Philip talked to him a while, asking him all sorts of the usual questions: concerning the new road the Thai government had built through the city, all the rebuilt homes funded by foreign governments (not the USA), or general questions about life there…

…Philip then asked a quick, “Is there a lot of drug trafficking through here?”

The man became very solemn, looked Philip square in the eyes, and simply said, “Yes.”

Its a major problem in this southeastern coastline of Haiti. Jamaica and a host of other nearby countries – just out of sight but within a powerboat’s tank of gas range – move drugs and money through Haiti and its open ports. Its well known in this area.

Stay tuned…

PS: This is a real cave:

Same day. Just a few hundred yards away. With all it’s sham and drudgery, Haiti is still a very beautiful place.
