So, what do you do when there are hundreds of people in the space where you need to make a quick portrait for a fairly major university advertisement?
Take it anyway.
This photo was taken in the university’s main lobby, probably a couple hundred people – new students, freshmen, parents – standing around waiting in a mile-long line for the dining hall. Yes, we had a captive audience.
Anyways, the light setup is rather simple. Two lights, one shoot-through umbrella just barely out of frame right – BIG light. Then, second light in my new toy, a Lumiquest Softbox III. The umbrella is simple enough, but that tiny softbox is really great for spreading out the light just enough – in this case, softening the kicker so it doesn’t have a super hard edge while filling the entire piano with even light.

Never think, “Oh no! The situation is not exactly what I prepared for!” Sometimes the outcome is better than it could ever have been otherwise.
