I love shooting at this time of the day! And, I love how images tend to draw a certain feel, with bold colors and definite subjects. I tend to use all shorter prime lenses (and a 17-35mm) taking advantage of the lens-changing as an extra step in the process. It causes me to make deliberate choices about focal length, how I will approach the subject, how the subject with appear in relation to the light… etc…
This was the Knights Joust. It is a human-to-human joust using PVC pipes with the ends covered with a ball of duct tape encasing a wadded towel (I think) and sprayed with shaving cream.
The participants – all pledges – wearing all sorts of different costumes…
…mostly cardboard or old Halloween costumes…
…then “gallop” towards one another (sorta Monty Python style) and… well… joust.
It is tournament based, the loser often the one hit the most, marked by the shaving cream.
It draws quite a crowd, being one of the bigger single events to occur during the induction week.
At the end, the current members of the Knights social club (read: fraternity) choose a winner. They then march across the quad to the pledges and…
Then, the Dark Knight (last year’s winner of the joust) comes out…
…and the winning pledge goes head to head with the Dark Knight.
However, the incoming pledge does not get a weapon this time.
Stay tuned,
