I am always sad to see a trip begin to wind down.
But leaving people is always far harder than leaving a place. After a while, you begin to realize that these little pockets of people all over the world actually do remember you. When you go back and visit them and they remember everything about you.
That’s a good people. That’s my people. That’s my Cuba. I will return.
Little did I know, this day was about to get significantly longer. While at the Havana airport, the flights got delayed. Then delayed again. Or as they call it “adjusted.” You don’t want to see adjusted.
Well, there’s only so much you can do from the Havana airport. None of the phones will make international calls. And the single internet cafe – it has 4 computers paid for on 30min blocks of time.
If you ever have had a flight delayed that caused other connecting flights to be missed, you have probably experienced the slug-fest that ensues at the next airport when everyone spazes out on the Customer Service desk: “Give me a voucher!” “I need to be in Tibet in 6 minutes!” “You better pay for my hotel or I’m going to kill you with this ticket stub!”
So, instead of suffering that, went ahead and took action to get the flights changed. In the infinite wonder that is Delta customer service, I was able – with the help of parents, family friends, and a few International Delta agents – to get 14 people rescheduled for a leisurely departure the next afternoon AND hotel rooms for all at the closest hotel to the Cancun airport.
No sweat. Well, maybe a little sweat. 120+ emails later and things get done. Just talking through the situation, names, confirmations, Skymiles accounts… and magically its done.
Stay tuned…
