Some things take time. Just a few things in perspective:
On September 11, 2001, nobody took photos of the disaster on their camera phones… because they had yet to be invented. Yes, even the iPod had not been released yet for another two months. Oh, and you could still get a laptop with a trackball. Sexy…
I was in the 10th grade, my dad had to pick me up from school because I was not yet 16 years old. Even more sexy…
You could see your loved one off at the gate before boarding the plane instead of being stopped right inside the airport front door. Romantic movies had to redesign their entire “leaving on a jetplane” cliche because its somehow just not as romantic to toss someone out on the curb outside the airport to say goodbye.
Gladiator won the Academy Award for Best Picture and that really weird Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon trip-out was still big news. Nerdy kids everywhere were dressing up for the debut of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
And, I bet you won’t know this one (which proves how much sports means in the grand scheme of things): the Arizona Diamondbacks – who are they again? – won the World Series against the Yankees. No, really! President Bush tossed the first pitch, making it to the plate fairly well despite the fact he was wearing huge body armor and looked like a darker version of the Michelin Man.
U2’s “Beautiful Day” took top honors at the Grammys… and *NSYNC was definitely still around. Somebody named Shelby Lynne was the Best New Artist – over Brad Paisley – and that just goes to show you how accurate the Grammys are at predicting one-hit-wonders…
Amazing how different the world is now. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were still together (barely), Dale Earnhardt died at the Daytona 500, and Kofi Annan received the Nobel Peace Prize.
And now in 2011, all that technology, all that time, all that history…
Stay tuned…
