Never expect to know where you will be this afternoon, let alone tomorrow or next week. If you do, you’re likely setting yourself up for disappointment. Because whatever you THINK you’re going to be doing, wherever you think you’ll be doing it – this is life and this is traveling – things are going to change.
I expected to be on a train to Istanbul right now. Instead I am sitting in a train station in Thessaloniki waiting for a midnight:30 train…
…to Bucharest, Romania.
And there’s the big reveal!
Evidently the train that runs from Thessaloniki to Istanbul does not exist anymore. Regardless of what ALL the travel books, train table books, train table websites, online travel sites for Greece AND Turkey… this train is no longer in service.
So, the only way into Turkey is a 12-14 hour bus ride full of bathroom and smoke breaks… or you can take a few days and go up to Sophia, Bulgaria, and come back down (we think it’ll take about 2 days worth of travel time because the trains don’t run every day). So, we’re opting out of Turkey – as much as I really hate to do it – and continuing on up into the rest of the Balkans and Eastern Europe. The Eurail has been activated.
Well, anyways, all of that travel drama aside, here’s a few photos I took while sitting at the corner cafe on Omrou Street in downtown Thessaloniki. These were all taken within a few minutes of each other and the subjects were all at almost the same place. With the intention of making images black and white, of course… we have…
…the smoker.
…the bus driver.
…and the guy with an expressive face.
Sorry, didn’t have a good one for that last guy.
But, anyways… two more hours before our train. Blogging, writing, working photos. What an amazing journey it has been since Ethiopia…
…and there’s more, I promise. Stay tuned!
