Staying in the Naples area, Pompeii – or mention of Pompeii – is unavoidable.
Most school children know about Pompeii from around the time that they learn that Italy is that country over there that is shaped like a boot.
Many many times to Italy, but this was my first time to Pompeii… and I really didn’t expect how huge it was. The Roman Forum, the Athens Agora, Corinth, Old Cairo… the shear scale of Pompeii is difficult to comprehend.
Complete streets and neighborhoods and zones, it’s really huge…

All this was buried…

Kinda makes me look a little differently at the cities I visit. The world, as timeless as it may be, is quite fragile.
Things break. And it takes so little to destroy an entire civilization.
.
And the streets where we live and travel may be no different from Pompeii…
So, worry less and appreciate life.
But, most of all, take nothing for granted.
