I love street photography. And I especially love to wander a big city, uninhibited by time or equipment, and just make images.
I have said in the past: “I get so aggravated with living in a small town because there’s no way to shoot like you do in a big city!” In all sincerity there actually is not any way to make the same kind of images in a small town as I do in New York or Chicago or London or Athens.
But that’s kind of the beauty of it.
Would I prefer to wander the streets of a major metropolis? Sure. There’s only so much time I can spend on a dozen streets in a town of 10,000 before it’s all been seen. I can wander Berlin for days and not overlap a single street.
But that’s where the challenge is. The images may not be as sexy as they are in Madrid or Hong Kong, but they are completely unique. People don’t really drive around with dogs in the back of their oversize bed pickup trucks in Paris. That’s southern USA. But we don’t have flower vendors on the corner like they do in Munich, either.
Don’t get down on your little town because there isn’t a constant stream of people walking down the sidewalk. Embrace it. How boring would the world be if every town were just the same.
Stay tuned…
