Truth and consequences…

If anyone has ever wondered where my titles come for blog posts, you should know they are usually completely random…

Honestly, they’re not even close to purposefully relevant. Okay, maybe sometimes. But usually its the first thing to pop into my head.

But this is an easy way to spur a writing spurt. Lets put two things together… this title plus this photo…

…completely random, yet watch what happens when I just start writing:

It is inevitable that, if you do something for long enough, you begin to feel like the rooms you frequent begin to take on their own personality. This room, I’ve photographed weddings, famous poets, retirements of elderly professors, and the former President of the United States.

Rooms, buildings, inanimate objects… they take on their own personality. This room and I have an extreme love-hate relationship. I love it because it has amazing light. Whether its the window light – huge surrounding, soft light – or overhead spots, I can get the result I want. I even know how to control them with the really fancy digital controller and get what I need. Last wedding I shot, they even let me light it the way I wanted! Beyond that, I know little tricks to be able to get in the door whether its locked or not.

But we have a love-hate… every surface is reflective: the windows are mirrors at night and the wood panels that cover the wall? Can’t shoot a flash without a major spectral highlight.

Regardless, this room is as it stands. A perfect square, all its faults, but its one of the easiest rooms to shoot in – day or night. Weirdest part, its intended as a wedding chapel.

A wedding chapel? Indeed.

So, this is the room where I have made thousands of photographs, dozens and dozens published, hundreds archived, and quite a few hanging on some young couple’s wall at home.

The truth is: all of life is like this room. We spend more time in it than we ever want to admit, we know it well enough to identify all its flaws, yet we know it so intimately that everything else in the world is measured against it – for better or worse.

……

See? That’s what happens from the marriage of this title with this photo… things just spill out. Some randomness, some reaching for metaphor – because I just roll like that.

Okay, but seriously… stay tuned… as random as it might be, theren’t nothing better than a little spontaneity in one’s life…
