If you weren’t aware, I teach at a university as an adjunct professor.
For the test, a bonus questions on this first test was:
“Within two stops, give the exposure of this room right now… without a meter.”
The settings on the camera were a straight-forward 1/60th @ f/2.8 on ISO400.
I’m quite proud of my class! Much of the class attempted it, and a surprising amount got it right… for the first test of the year in basic photography.
Knowing exposures in your head is wildly helpful. Amazingly helpful. And getting it within a stop or two makes a great difference. Even with the meter, when I take my camera out of the bag and turn it on, already having decided approximately where the light is, I can start setting the camera long before I ever have to take the first photo.
Then, having it within a stop or two? Nobody is every waiting on me and I miss far less shots grinding away at the dials.
Just something I don’t necessarily require, but I know how much of a “bonus” it really is in the real world. So it was worth 5 points…
Stay tuned…
