Like a back-lot set used in a post-apocalyptic movie, the 2004 Athens Olympic stadium sits mostly abandoned east of downtown. The whole campus is immense. The group took a tour of it on bicycles.
But not before training with Greek coaches.
These coaches, some former Olympic athletes, demonstrated and taught proper form for a handful of games that the ancient Greeks also competed in: discus, javelin, long jump, and shot-put.
…and the glassy swimming hole where Michael Phelps won his first medals.
It all comes down to the main event being the scene of the main event.
Still, of all Greek sporty-ness, my favorite is the plains of Marathon that we visited this morning.
The story is amazing and the symbolism is profound.
And I have plans to return here VERY soon.
For that, stay tuned…
