But there is a lot there. In the remoteness of the southwest peninsula of Haiti, an engineering project has been undertaken that rivals many things I’ve seen in Europe or the States.
The road from Les Cayes to Jeremie was once a one of the roughest in the country. (And it still is impressive how difficult it is in some places.) But crews are widening the road (it was once barely a cart path), grading it, and half of it is even paved! From a road that was once so rough that super-low gears and four wheel drive was required, now there are sections where it is possible to run at normal speeds and without worrying if you will break an axle.
This road will change things in this area of the world. The road was once so difficult that nothing perishable could make the trip to Port-au-Prince in much less than a whole day of travel; however, now it takes a fraction of that time.
This will change the tiny mountain villages, too. Those who live along the road are seeing increased traffic which they hope will bring increased opportunities. Maybe jobs? Perhaps power or running water? Hopefully better access to healthcare?
It may be slow change and not everyone is seeing it right away, but there are people working in parts of Haiti like this. There are things being done.
Stay tuned…
